The antiquity of the units dedicated to the motor transport of cargo grew in March 2019 compared to the same month last year, but also took a significant jump, unlike the average age registered in the same month of 2017, figures from the Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT).

The dependence recorded that in the third month of this year the average age of the cargo fleet was 17.9 years, 4.25% above the average of the same period of 2018, which was 17.17 years.

The increase in the average age of freight vehicles stands out in March of this year since in the same month of 2017 the antiquity of the units was 16.91 years, compared to March 2018, the increase was 1.53 percent.

Meanwhile, the vehicle fleet also grows. Data of the SCT indicated that to March of this year 2019 the park of heavy vehicles reached 995 thousand 167 units, while in the same period of the previous year was 930 thousand 201, which meant an increase of 6.98 percent.

In March of last year, the number of vehicles in the service of the federally-authorized motor transport increased 5.59% compared to the same month of 2017, when the number of units was 880 thousand 914.

Meanwhile, manufacturers of cargo vehicles join forces to renew the vehicle fleet with new technologies for engines that reduce pollutant emissions, standards that are established in the Official Mexican Standard-NOM-044-Semarnat-2017, and that from July of this year will come into operation.

On the other hand, although so far no public resources have been allocated for the renewal of the fleet for this year, the National Development Plan 2019-2024 indicates that transportation in Mexico should aim to be more sustainable, so it will be part of the occupations of the current administration, although the lines of action are still unknown, as public resources are concerned, to achieve this objective.
